Quite simply a minimalist is someone who follows the principles of minimalism. Ok…..so what is minimalism?
Miriam-Webster defines minimalism as a style or technique that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity.
The Minimalists (Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus) describe minimalism as a tool that can assist you in ‘finding freedom from the trappings of the consumer culture we’ve built our lives around’. By embracing minimalism they note we can question which things add value to our lives. By this notion, there is no single definition of a minimalist as we all value different things.
Joshua Becker of Becoming Minimalist defines minimalism as ‘the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of anything that distracts from it’. For me being a minimalist is really about building simplicity into my life. It is being intentional around how I choose to spend my time, money and energy. By being true to your values, the result is more freedom to live a more meaningful life.
Focusing in on the things that bring me joy such as spending time with friends and family, sharing my passion for nutrition, travelling, cooking and learning helps me decide what I will let into my life. For me minimalism isn’t about bragging rights of having less than 100 items (which for clarity I definitely don’t!). It is ensuring that the items I do possess have a purpose and provide value.
When we start to declutter all the excess noise from our lives, we end up with more of what lifts us up instead of what brings us down.
